Vegan Food in China: Groceries. What I Eat Every Day

Thriving as a Vegan in China

Living as a vegan in China might seem daunting at first, but with the right tools, it’s surprisingly effortless.

The secret? China’s powerhouse e commerce apps that deliver everything from fresh produce to niche vegan products straight to your door.

Gone are the days of scavenging specialty stores—today, your vegan pantry is just a few taps away.

The Apps That Make It Possible

1. Taobao:  The Amazon of China, offering millions of products from local and international sellers. Search terms like “纯素” (chún sù, “pure vegan”) or “植物基” (zhí wù jī, “plant-based”) unlock a treasure trove of options.

2. Pinduoduo:  Known for affordable bulk and individual purchases and farm-fresh produce. Perfect for stocking up on staples like tofu, mushrooms, seasonal veggies and any kind of vegan products at unbeatable prices.

My Daily Vegan Haul: East Meets West

I usually balance Chinese classics with global vegan comforts, mixing processed and whole foods like Mock Meats (Soy-based “素肉” -sù ròu- mimicking chicken, pork, and even duck) or Mock Eggs and my favorite western products like Violife, Pasta Agnesi, Gullón cookies, Rigoni chocolate spread and jams.

You just can't get too used to a product because they may run out of stock for months.

These are only a few of the products that I always have in my house.

Why China Wins for Vegan Convenience

After years of vegan travel across the world, I’ve found China’s online shopping ecosystem unmatched.

The sheer variety—from local mock meats to European vegan chocolates—means I eat more diversely here than I did elsewhere, and the prices are unbeatable: sometimes imported Italian items are even cheaper than in Italy.

So, forget the myth of limited options: in China, being vegan isn’t just possible —it’s deliciously easy and affordable.
